How to change your garden...water

Water has a harmonious effect on our souls, so in a garden the sense of the garden calming our inner selves is doubled by the presence of water there as well. There is plenty of evidence that people enjoy being near water so it is a popular choice to add to a garden.

Water is an easy element to incorporate into a garden because water features are everywhere around us in our natural environment.  And where there is water, plants are sure to follow, so they certainly go together.  For example, in the wild naturally occurring ponds and streams are fringed by planting that self-seeded itself there.  So adding the right plants and marginal plants to a water feature in your garden will instantly make it feel 'natural'.

There are many ways to bring water into a garden – ponds, fountains, bubbling water features, water walls etc.  A popular choice with designers is a rill, a shallow and narrow 'path' of water that can stop abruptly or feed into another water feature. They can be a slightly safer choice with children around, but all children should be supervised near any water in your garden.  Further examples of rills are in our earlier 'How to change your garden..' blogs on Repition and Focal Points

Water features can be subtle, or really grab your attention.

They can be ornate or functional.

They can be natural or formal.

They can be big or small.

They can be dynamic or static.

Whatever your preference, there will be a water feature that suits you and your garden

Moving water creates an additional feature via the sound it produces, which can be a fairly gentle and quiet to a more impactful sound.  If moving water is required, a pump will be needed.  Solar powered may be sufficient for a small feature, but if keeping fish is required, then a stronger pump connected to an electrical supply may be needed.

Still water creates amazing reflections that really add another dimension to a water feature.  By adding a black dye to the water, the reflection intensifies.
